Reptiles this care guide covers
Otago skinks (Oligosoma otagense), grand skinks (Oligosoma grande) and Scree skinks (Oligosoma waimatense) are the three largest species of skinks which survive on mainland New Zealand (all in the South Island).
They are all diurnal and avid sunbaskers, making them ideal advocacy / display animals as they are readily observed in captivity. In captivity the main challenges are creating a rocky habitat they can climb on (which wears their claws down / prevents them from becoming overgrown), and these species can be reluctant to breed in regions outside of their native range.
These skinks can only be held on higher level permits (conservation / breeding programme species).
